Here we have a compot with some nice stocky seedlings. They are ready to be moved up to their own individual pots. We will use a seedling mix of tree fern, charcoal, Aliflor & Perlite. We use both plastic and clay pots for seedlings depending on media and orchid. For this demonstration we will use clay. If the seedlings are not too overgrown you may be able to just wiggle them out of the compot. These seedlings are stocky and have grown into each other which is why we will use a water bath to separate them. Use a lever to gently ease the seedlings out of the compot. Remove the old potting media by gently working the roots with your fingers. It is not necessary to remove every last bit, the next step will take care of that.

Drop the seedlings into the basin of water and agitate them gently. Separate the seedlings and gently pull away any dead leaves or roots.

Shake the excess water off of the seedlings and set them aside to dry. Now we're ready to pot them up in their own individual pots.

A little drainage material will help keep the bottom of the pot open. Fine potting mixes in particular have a tendency to compact at the bottom of the pot. Drainage prevents this. Find the new lead or eye. You will place the seedling in the pot so that the active growth is in the center of the pot.

Begin to add the media all around the roots. Fill the pot to within ¼ to ½" of the rim. Do not cover any green parts of the seedling.

If necessary, use a small rhizome
clip to hold the seedling securely.
Place the clip close to the
pseudobulbs so that it presses
down against the media and holds
the plant firmly.
Don't forget the nametag!
