Begin by sterilizing your cutting tools. Remember to re-sterilize before cutting another plant. This potting technique is extremely easy and has proven to provide excellent growth. This husky overgrown equitant Oncidium is ready for repotting. Today's colorful miniature Oncidium hybrids are bred from orchids now properly known as Tolumnia. In nature they are twig epiphytes and found growing on small branches of shrubs. We will tailor our potting to meet their need for drying quickly. Most of these orchids will be potted in an open media. You should have no trouble working the plant from the pot with your fingers. If necessary, use a small lever. We will divide this plant into 2 or 3 divisions. We want to be sure to leave at least two mature fans of leaves and one new growth per division.

We have cut the stolon and now have two nice divisions. Use a cotton swab to dab a little fungicide on the cut parts of both divisions. We will use a 3-inch clay pot for this piece. If the plant was potted in bark mix, remove as much media as possible, Cut away any dead roots or leaves.  Hold the plant more or less centered in the pot and add a few pieces of medium to large grade charcoal. Try to wedge the charcoal against the roots to hold the plant in place. Don't forget the nametag. Add the date if you like.
