Preparing an orchid for repotting is covered in other sections. Go back a page if you need help. Here we have assembled the items listed at the top of the page. Start by pushing the piece of heavy wire (10-12gauge) through the top of the tree fern slab.  Using the pliers, cut a piece of heavy wire to the appropriate size and fashion the wire into an "S" for a hanger. Cut a piece of the lighter wire (16-18gauge) to a convenient size - 8-12 inches (20-30cm). Bend the wire in the middle and fashion it into a "U" shaped staple. Examine your orchid to determine which direction the growth is going in. The new lead, or most actively growing part, will go toward the top of the mount.

Place the orchid at the bottom of the slab with the hanger at the top. Make sure that the new growth faces the top of the mount. Place your staple over the rhizome somewhere in the middle of the plant and push the staple through the tree fern. Twist the wire together to fasten it at the back of the mount. Begin by hand and then tighten slightly with the pliers. Be careful not to overtighten, or else the wire will break and you'll have to start over. The orchid should be snug but not mashed against the tree fern.

Use the pliers to cut off the excess wire at the back of the mount.

Attach the plant's nametag and you're done !
